Classic Heirloom with Sweet Orange Flesh and Netted Rind

'Hale's Best Jumbo' is a classic heirloom cantaloupe variety that has been a garden favorite since the 1920s. This reliable variety produces large, oval melons weighing 5-6 pounds with heavily netted rinds and thick, sweet orange flesh. Reaching maturity in 80-90 days, Hale's Best Jumbo is known for its exceptional flavor and aroma. The melons have small seed cavities, providing more edible flesh. The vigorous vines are productive and disease-resistant. This variety performs well in various growing conditions and is perfect for home gardens where traditional, flavorful melons are desired. The melons slip easily from the vine when ripe.

Growing Tips

Hale's Best Jumbo Cantaloupe thrives in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Plant after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to at least 70°F. Space plants 36-48 inches apart in rows 5-6 feet apart or in hills. Keep soil consistently moist during fruit development. Fertilize regularly. Harvest when melons slip easily from the vine and have strong sweet aroma. Netting should be well-developed and background color should change from green to tan.
